Substackers to Follow Based on Your Travel Plans
In the know writers all over the world
Hello everyone! I’m writing to you from Corsica this week, where I unknowingly booked an Airbnb without wifi. It didn’t even occur to me that this was something I had to check for these days, but here we are. Due to the lack of internet, I wasn’t able to finish the article I was planning on for today, but I’ve still got something great for you.
Since joining Substack, I’ve found so many great travel writers here, sharing their lives and recommendations in their respective cities. I’ve been keeping a list so I remember to re-read them before I travel somewhere, and today I thought I’d share that list with you.
These are the location-specific authors I regularly read. If you’re planning to visit any of these spots, definitely check them out for plenty of local knowledge and recommendations!
London, England
Leave it to Anna - Leave It To Anna knows the best places in London and in the UK in general. She’s always sharing great local shops, the kinds of places that you feel good spending your money in. She also has unique recommendations for bookstores, day trips, private clubs; she’s an all-around expert on the city!
Athens, Greece
Matriarch Eats - I first started following Anastasia Miari after buying her cookbook, Mediterranea, which features recipes from nonnas all over the Mediterranean. On Substack, she shares her favorite places to stay, eat, and explore in Athens, as well as plenty of pieces on what it means to live a Mediterranean life.

Sardinia, Italy
Cagliarifornia - Gabrielle Soria shares stories from her life in Sardinia. From finding a community in her boxing gym companions to life through her dog, Heidi’s, eyes on the island. I particularly love how she describes how she takes a thoughtful approach to living in a place that she’s not originally from.
Rome & Naples, Italy
Local Style - Gabriela R. Proietti shares Italian trends, vintage finds, and where to find true “made in Italy” pieces. I have a whole list of shops and markets that I’ve found from her posts that I’ll be checking out next time I’m in Rome.
Bologna, Italy
Autumn in Italia - Autumn Foutz shares reflections on Italian culture, food, and travel through the eyes of an American living in Bologna. I particularly love learning about the food traditions of Italy and the Emilia-Romagna region through her writing.

Paris, France
Femme Collective - Want to know what life in Paris is really like? Then check out Diana Baleya’s pieces on topics like finding a job, making friends, and the cost of living. Plus, every month she shares a roundup of cool stuff happening around the city!
David Lebovitz Newsletter - Chances are you’re already familiar with David Lebovitz as he’s kind of the OG “American in Paris,” but if not, definitely check him out for Paris dining guides, recipes and adventures all over France!
Marseille, France
Marie-Marthe - Mary Martha lives in what I consider to be the most beautiful part of France, and she captures the region through her photo essays. Not only are her photos stunning, but I’ve learned a lot about various regions of France and have bookmarked quite a few places to check out from her writing. In fact, her Corsica series convinced me that I needed to come here!
Bordeaux, France
Delightfully Disoriented en France - Slightly more “life in France” than travel focused, but Valerie Rivera shares a lot of good knowledge for anyone planning to visit, or live, in France.

Luxembourg
Carry Ons and Croissants - If you’re planning to visit, or even just want to know more about Luxembourg, check out Lauren D.’s writing and Instagram. She has plenty of good advice for how to visit this somewhat under the radar country in Europe.
All Over
Far From Here - I can’t categorize Stina Gustafsson under a specific location, because she writes about a number of places, but they are almost always places I don’t see other people covering with nearly the same amount of depth. From Cairo to Sri Lanka to her hometown in the north of Sweden, I’m always discovering something new from Stina.
Teacher by Trade, Mentor by Mistake - Not necessarily location or travel based, but Daniel Puzzo writes about a number of topics that I think are interesting to audiences similar to mine. From leaving Ukraine at the beginning of the war, to his antics all over the world, he is definitely well traveled and delivers everything with a good dose of snark.
With Gusto - Ok, I know that you’re probably not traveling to Iraq on your Summer vacation, but I still wanted to include Adrian Landin’s writing because he’s one of the few people who cover the Middle East (and other places too) from a truly human perspective.
I’m sure there are others who I’m not aware of, let me know who I missed that I should be following!

What great company here - I’m subscribing to some new Substacks! Love this post!
I guess I'm not surprised that you're without wifi in Corsica, I think they do enjoy being unique and a bit untamed! Have a wonderful trip and can't wait to read about it. Thanks so much for including me in your roundup - Marseille is such a fantastic place to live and I love seeing it get the love it deserves. And I'm excited to check out the other writers, merci beaucoup!
